Red Panthers target statement results against Australia and the Netherlands

The first Belgian block of the FIH Hockey Pro League at the Belfius Hockey Arena offered a clear picture of where the Red Panthers currently stand: competitive against the world’s best, ambitious, and still hungry for more. As the second and final week in Wavre begins tomorrow, Belgium remains firmly focused on a bigger objective: a podium result at the FIH Hockey World Cup in August this year.

The campaign started with an encouraging performance against world’s number two Argentina. Trailing 0-2, the Red Panthers showed remarkable resilience to fight their way back through goals from Delphine Marien and Stéphanie Vanden Borre. Although Argentina eventually claimed the bonus point in the shoot-out, Belgium proved it could compete with one of the world’s strongest teams.

Two days later, the Panthers produced arguably their most complete performance of the week. Dominating China from start to finish, Belgium secured a convincing 5-0 victory thanks to goals from Astrid Bonami, Delphine Marien, Charlotte Englebert and youngster Famke Van Heel. The result highlighted both the team’s attacking potential and its growing defensive solidity.

The return match against China served as a reminder of the fine margins at international level. Despite controlling large parts of the game and creating opportunities, the Panthers were unable to overturn an early Chinese goal and suffered a frustrating 0-1 defeat. It was a valuable lesson in efficiency and consistency.

Saturday’s second encounter with Argentina once again demonstrated the character within the Belgian squad. After falling 0-2 behind, the Panthers fought back through rising talent Famke Van Heel and a powerful penalty corner from Charlotte Englebert. Just as Belgium seemed poised to earn a deserved draw, Argentina snatched victory from a late penalty corner, leaving the hosts empty-handed despite another highly competitive display.

The overall balance of the first week remains encouraging. The Red Panthers have shown they can challenge top-ranked opponents, while several young players have continued to establish themselves on the international stage. The emergence of talents such as Famke Van Heel and Perrine de Clerck underlines the depth and future potential of this Belgian squad.
Now comes the final part of the Belgian Pro League campaign. Starting tomorrow, the Panthers will face Australia and the Netherlands two times until next weekend.

The Red Panthers have already shown their promise in Wavre. The challenge over the coming days is to transform that promise into results against some of the world’s strongest nations. Supported by their home crowd, they will look to take another important step in their journey towards the very top of international hockey.
